Class 2

The Comparative Form

We use the comparative  form to compare and contrast different objects or people. Use the comparative form to show the difference between two objects or people, and we use THAN before what or who we are comparing to.

Here there are some activities that you may use to develop this topic.

  • First of all, you can begin the class using a dynamic or presenting a video in order to motive the class and convey an idea related to what the topic is about.

  • Then, you can present a list of adjectives, it would be fine if you teach first some personality and appearance adjectives shuch as smart, funny, tall, short, etc. because you can introduce an oral activity with them writing in a piece of paper names of friends from the class, the school (it is a small school) or teachers, and finally they compare the people who are in the lists. For example: ¨Ana is shorter than Benjamin.¨ ¨The teacher is older than Javier.¨If you do not want to use names of people from the school, yo may images with diffrent people and names.

Example: Al is shorter than Ed.

Here you are a list in order to introduce the topic.

  • After that, you can explain to your students in details about the topic emphasizing the different cases to compare; for example, the endings of the adjectives like -er, -ier, etc. In addition to that, it is important practicing the pronunciation of the adjectives, and making oral sentences using comparatives with the help of pictures or flashcards.

  • Finally, you can make other activities such a game ( domino) where students can recognize the adjective and its comparative, in one side the name of the adjective, and the other side comparative .

You can also use some practice related to the topic. Here there are another  links which can help you.
